Visiting Amelia Island
Look for flights into the closest airport which is Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) to find the best pricing. Breeze Airlines and Southwest Airlines are good ones to look into. Also, please let me know what times are best for your child.
You will find the most reasonable prices for places to stay are in St. Mary’s, GA and Yulee, FL. If you prefer to stay on Amelia Island, the Omni Amelia Island Resort is beautiful with lots of shade and walking trails by the beach. There are many wonderful places to stay in the area.
Amelia Island is very safe and has a beautiful old downtown with Victorian-style houses. Jacksonville is not far from my clinic.
You can rent a car at the airport. Some families have used TURO for car rental from private people which cuts the cost almost in half. Also, there are several places along the 13 mile stretch of beach such as Peter’s Point where you can drive a 4x4 and park directly on the beach and offload right on the beach - no long walk!
Several kids got some pretty bad diaper rash from sitting for a long time in one spot in the sand and salt water. Please apply a good cream barrier and move your child frequently if necessary.
Consider socks or water shoes to protect skin. July through September is hot and humid with frequent but brief thunderstorms in the afternoon. Hurricane season is from June 1st - November 30th. While this area rarely gets hit, this is out of my control.
The beach on Amelia Island has beautiful white sand with no shade. I have sand toys, an umbrella, and beach towels if you want to use them.
