Course Description:
Physical therapists and clinical researchers from around the world have published peer-reviewed publications about the safety and effectiveness of electrical stimulation in pediatric practice.
This 12/14 hours course is designed for clinicians interested in the most advanced application of non-invasive electrical stimulation to maximize clinical outcomes. It is designed for beginners to advanced practitioners in electrical stimulation. A major portion of the course will focus on non-invasive “spinal cord” stimulation for patients with spinal cord impairments, cerebral palsy, plexus paralysis and other motor impairments. A special portion will be devoted to implementing the most effective treatment plans for improving trunk control, upper extremity function and gait.
There will be “Hands-On” practice sessions, treatment demonstrations, demonstration treatments and short videos of actual clinical cases.

The Turtle Bracing System for easily making splints, braces and TLSOs can be introduced on request.

Program Objectives:
1. Describe the latest developments in non-invasive electrical stimulation, focusing on spinal electrical stimulation (SS) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) applied to the pediatric population.
2. Offer an advanced practice model to focus on patient- centered, personalized intervention.
3. Provide templates for clinical decisions regarding screening, testing, and establishing outcome measures specifically tailored to the pediatric population.
4. Implement the most effective treatment plans for FES and SS.

Participants will be able to:
1. State the required stimulation parameters and appropriate protocols/procedures used in pediatrics.
2. State the advantages, limitations, contra-indications, and indications for the use of electrical stimulation in the management of pediatric patients.
3. Screen pediatric candidates to determine if they could benefit from the treatment.
4. State the various mechanisms by which FES and SS can affect the peripheral neuromuscular, peripheral vascular, skeletal as well as central nervous systems.
5. Select appropriate patients and implement surface spinal electrical stimulation in children with spina bifida or spinal cord injury.
6. Perform (on a fellow participant) the application of 2 to 3 of the learned FES or SS protocols and procedures.
7. Advise caregivers how to properly use the stimulation at home in to achieve more effective and efficient outcomes.

How to Host:
The 12/14 hours course can be on a weekday or weekend. There is the option to divide the course into two days, or do 4 hours online and one day in person.

Gerti Motavalli does:
– all the registration, collecting of money, sign-up sheets and course certificates. She will be arranging her travel and hotel. She will bring enough e-stim units and electrodes for up to 30 participants.
– There is CEUs certification in Florida for the courses. Some states are very strict with accepting CEU credits, others only need documentation of completion. Gerti has all the documentation needed to support most states’ CEU requirements. Please check with your state.

The host does:
– the advertising, the announcement will also be listed on Gerti Motavalli’s website spinalstim.net and Instagram.
– The course can be cancelled up to 4 weeks before the course date, at no cost. Afterwards, if already booked, and cancelled by the host, the plane ticket needs to be reimbursed.
In the USA: The course will be conducted if at least 10 participants signed up 4 weeks before the course starts. The host can choose to hold the course and to pay for the missing income if less that 10 participants signed up in the end.
– Free spots: after 10 paying participants, one free spot, 20 paying participants two and 27 participants three free spots.

Internationally: The course will be conducted if at least 16 participants signed up 4 weeks before the course starts, or the host can choose to pay for the missing income if less that 16 participants signed up in the end.
– Free spots: after 20 paying participants, one free spot, 30 paying participants two free spots.

Gerti Motavalli needs:
⁃ A class room or gym with chairs and tables
⁃ AV equipment to show her presentation
⁃ Refreshments for the break
⁃ 3 children for demonstration treatments, at least one or two with spina bifida, the others one could have CP, or other motor impairment. Ideally the demo kids would be one with more trunk/scoliosis and the other one more lower/upper extremity involvement. Please discuss possible demo children with Gerti to find the best fit.
⁃ Course is limited to 30 participants
⁃ Gerti will bring up to 15 Chattanooga Continuum units and all needed electrodes with her
There will be the option to buy units at a reduced rate during the course.
